Super Bowl Sunday is our unofficial celebration of football, food and million-dollar advertising, and there are many ways you can celebrate it — or not. You could go to a bar full of supporters for one of the teams or you could watch Oscar-nominated shorts. Here’s a round-up of some notable events where you can watch the big game, as well as other events that are football-free.
TEAM BARS
Jalapeño Pete’s: This Studio City Mexican restaurant will temporarily be rechristened as Jalapeño Chiefs during the Super Bowl. Kansas City Chiefs fans will be celebrating the team’s first Super Bowl appearance since they won Super Bowl IV way back in 1970. The venue has become the home for local fan group Chiefs Los Angeles, and as a special treat, they’ll have barbecue shipped straight from Kansas City. San Francisco Saloon: As the name suggests, the San Francisco Saloon is the No. 1 place to watch Bay Area teams. Dubbed “one of the wildest 49ers hotspots there is” by The Athletic, this Westside bar and grill is the place to go if you’re a NorCal native in SoCal. WATCH PARTIES
Maybe you’re like Rob Lowe and are just rooting for the NFL in general. These are the viewing parties for you.
Candela: The Super Bowl is in Miami this year and this Miracle Mile venue is going all out, bringing the South Beach vibes to L.A. There will be three LED screens showing the game, as well as drink specials, a taco bar and a DJ spinning hot tunes. If you’re more interested in having a Sunday Funday than a full-blown Super Bowl experience, this party starting at 2:30 p.m. might be the vibe for you. 831 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90036.
Lanea: What are the four sweetest words in the English language? “All you can eat.” For just $20 at the new Santa Monica bar Lanea, you can get all the tacos, quesadillas, nachos and more. Rockwell: They’ll have big screens at this Los Feliz brunch hotspot as well as plenty of game day drinks and snacks. Super (Comedy) Bowl: Comedy show “Chocolate Sundaes” normally takes place at the Laugh Factory, but on Super Bowl Sunday, they’re bringing the fun to Adults Only with comedy in the afternoon before the game. WHAT’S A FOOTBALL?
OK, maybe you don’t care for football or think you’re clever and call it “handegg.” The good news is that there’s plenty you can do that hasn’t been consumed by the NFL’s black hole.
2020 Oscar-Nominated Documentary Shorts: The Oscars are a week after the Super Bowl and for some folks, it’s even more important. If you’re hardcore about your Oscars prediction pool, you know that you don’t win by getting best picture or best actress right; you win by getting the minor categories like best documentary short. So, head to the Egyptian Theatre at 7:30 p.m. to see all five nominated short documentaries — “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl),” “Life Overtakes Me,” “In the Absence,” “St. Louis Superman” and “Walk Run Cha-Cha” — so you can make an educated prediction. The Grapes of Wrath/The Ox-Bow Incident: The American Cinematheque presents a “Super Dust Bowl Double Feature” at the Aero Theatre with two classics starring Henry Fonda. The double-feature starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $12. 1328 Montana Ave., Santa Monica, Santa Monica, CA 90403.
SoCal Stilt Jam!: Cirque performer Samantha Sapphire will host a stilt-based stroll around Los Angeles State Historic Park. While this event is intended for experienced stilt walkers who know how to use stilts without assistance, you can still come by to watch artificially tall people go for a walk. “Ground friends” are welcome to take photos and help reach things too low for the stilt walkers. Super Pup Sunday: OK, maybe you don’t care about the Super Bowl, but what about the Puppy Bowl? Join fellow dog lovers at the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace to watch the Puppy Bowl with other dog lovers. Tony Bennett: Living legend Tony Bennett hits the stage at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center’s Terrace Theater. This year marks the 70th anniversary of his first record, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” You can expect to hear that as well as other classics from his deep catalog like “Love is Here to Stay” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” The crooner gets started at 8 p.m. and tickets start at $35. 300 E. “What’s a Super Bowl?” Sunday Funday Game Day: For the second year in a row, drinking and gaming group Bars and Dice teams up with North Hollywood cocktail lounge The Other Door. While the Super Bowl will be on in the main room, the back dance floor will be transformed into a game room with food and drink specials. Expect a mix of casual, social and strategy games; titles may include Codenames, Dominion, Sushi Go and Ticket to Ride.
