The Internet Reacts to Trump’s COVID-19 Diagnosis

Last updated:

Where were you when the president tweeted out that he and the first lady had tested positive for COVID-19? I was in bed doing the New York Times crossword puzzle on my phone — it’s my pandemic hobby, OK? — and I didn’t even finish it because Twitter was too wild.

As much of the East Coast slept, the West Coast issued reactions that ranged from sincere “thoughts and prayers” to unparalleled glee, righteous anger and “is this a hoax?” For its part, Twitter says it will suspend anyone who openly hopes for Donald Trump’s death.

According to The Associated Press, Trump, who has downplayed the virus and mocked Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for wearing a mask during the most recent debate, will spend a “few days” at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he will work from the presidential suite. Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany described his symptoms as “mild,” and said his hospital stay comes from an abundance of caution and at the advice of his doctor.

Biden and his wife, Jill, both tested negative.

For those of you who were asleep last night or who decided to finish your crosswords, here are the hits:
