Bus Crash in East L.A. Injures 14 People

A crash between a Metro bus and a Volkswagen Beetle in East Los Angeles left 14 people with injuries this morning. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, three of the victims are in critical condition while the remaining 11 sustained minor injuries.

The crash occurred at about 10:45 a.m. at Whittier Boulevard and Downey Road. KTLA’s Sky5 chopper caught footage of the aftermath, which showed a completely totaled yellow Beetle crushed against the front of a bus and a traffic pole.

According to the California Highway Patrol incident report, the traffic pole is bent and is being held up by the car. It poses a “major hazard” as it could fall onto a nearby apartment complex.

The intersection will remain closed until further notice.

Update (4:17 p.m.): The 17-year-old driver of the Beetle has been arrested on suspicion of DUI. According to the CHP, the male driver sustained minor injuries while two female passengers are in critical condition.
