LAFD Knocks Down Brush Fire Near Griffith Observatory

Last updated:

During an already catastrophic wildfire season, the last thing we need is a fire that threatens the historic Griffith Observatory in Griffith Park. Luckily, firefighters were able to put down the brush fire that broke out in the area last night in just over an hour.

At about 10:41 p.m., a fire was reported at 2311 Hobart Blvd. Firefighters established a perimeter and extinguished the blaze in 64 minutes, containing it to about one acre. No structures were damaged, and there were no reported injuries.

The Los Angeles Fire Department shared the following images from the scene on Twitter:

Griffith Observatory remains closed due to the pandemic, though nearby hiking trails and the observatory grounds are open to the public.

Meanwhile, the Bobcat fire that once threatened the Mt. Wilson Observatory scorched over 115,000 acres since it was first reported on Sept. 6. and is currently 92% contained. According to a letter SoCal Edison sent the Public Utilities Commission Monday, the wildfire may have been caused by branches hitting its equipment.
