Earlier today, James Monroe Iglehart, who won a Tony for his performance as the Genie in Broadway’s “Aladdin” in 2014, announced the nominees for the 74th annual Tony Awards on YouTube. “Jagged Little Pill,” the rock opera based on the 1995 Alanis Morrisette album of the same name, leads the pack with 15 nominations, followed by “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” with 14. “Slave Play” and “Tina - The Tina Turner Musical” both scored 12 nominations each.
Potential nominees included any production that opened at any of the 41 eligible Broadway theaters during the 2019-2020 season. This year was, of course, a little different, as the truncated season began on April 26, 2019, but ended early on Feb. 19, 2020, due to the pandemic. As such, some shows never opened, and thus some categories, like best musical revival, were eliminated.
A committee of 41 theater professionals selected the nominees, and 784 Tony voters will choose the winners later this year, though the exact date has yet to be announced. Currently, all Broadway shows have been canceled through May 30, 2021.
